You can now talk to ChatGPT while using other apps
Since the ChatGPT app for iPhone was released more than a year ago, OpenAI has been continuously releasing updates to improve the user experience. The most recent version is no exception; it now permits background app usage.
Highlights:
- ChatGPT's iPhone app now supports background usage.
- Update the app, go to settings, and turn on "Background Conversations".
- Apple may integrate ChatGPT-like features into Siri with iOS 18.
You may now communicate with ChatGPT while using other applications if you have the ChatGPT iPhone app. With this version, ChatGPT is getting closer to being your go-to mobile digital assistant.
You must explicitly enable ChatGPT's new multitasking capability because it is disabled by default. How to do it is as follows:
- Verify that you have the most recent version of the ChatGPT app installed.
- Tapping your name at the bottom of the sidebar will open the app's settings.
- Turn on Background Conversations by swiping down.
After turning on background chats, you may use ChatGPT to initiate a voice chat, exit the program, and carry on the discussion. Because of this, it works a lot like Siri, an assistant.
Speaking of Siri, Apple is about to formally announce its collaboration with OpenAI in order to integrate ChatGPT-style intelligence into iOS 18 and maybe provide a completely redesigned Siri.
There's also a chance that Apple's most recent WWDC teaser may reveal a significant redesign of Siri. This would imply that Siri takes over all app functionalities and takes on a ChatGPT-like conversational tone.
Whatever Apple announces about its collaboration with OpenAI the next week, the continuous enhancements to the ChatGPT app, which increase its use on the iPhone, are a welcome move.
Since OpenAI rents its AI to Apple, which powers ChatGPT with Siri, the latter must get some special benefits if the former hopes to attract and retain iOS users. Otherwise, there would be no need to download and use ChatGPT since Siri already has all of its greatest features.
People may choose Siri with ChatGPT integration over the solo ChatGPT app, especially for less imaginative activities, if that becomes the default choice for Apple customers. Therefore, either Apple negotiated such an alluring agreement with OpenAI that the AI startup couldn't resist what the tech giant brings to the table, or ChatGPT will provide special benefits and OpenAI might profit from Apple's huge user base to develop ChatGPT further.
